Behind the Scenes:
How I Store and Organise My Yoga Mats

Picture

Welcome to my under-the-stairs cupboard! I promised I’d share a behind-the-scenes look at how I store and organise my yoga mats, so here it is—messy cables, chaos and all.

This little space is where I keep everything tidy(ish) and ready for classes. It might not look glamorous, but it works for me.

My Full-Size Mats
Most of the time, I use full-size mats—even when I’m teaching younger children. I find them more versatile and they give a lovely sense of space.
  • I use Yoga Matters sticky mats and I have 33 in total (I actually have 5 others hidden around the house in case of emergency 🤣 these are the ones I regularly use).
  • They’re stored in three large IKEA laundry bags, with 11 mats per bag.
  • 30 mats cover a full class, and the extra 2 are really useful if:
    • An adult wants to join in (hopefully they do).
    • A child needs to move to help with focus, comfort, or safety.

Inside each bag, I alternate the mats blue, green, blue, green. It might sound a bit odd, but it means I can count and set up the room much quicker. That’s my little system, and it works.

I use a flatbed trolley to move the bags around. Each bag goes on the trolley, and I hook cables around them to hold everything in place.
After a class, the children roll the mats up, we put 11 back into each bag, and then I load them into my car. Once home, they go straight back into their storage cupboard under the stairs until I need them again.

My Smaller Mats
I also have a full set of smaller mats—again, 33 in total.
  • These live in two IKEA bags tucked inside a drawer under the stairs.
  • One bag holds 16 mats, the other holds 17.
  • Instead of rolling, I fold them in sets of four and then place them into the bag.
This system has been through lots of trial and error, but it’s the one that’s stuck. I used to store large mats in these IKEA bags too, but switching to the clear laundry-style bags made life much easier (and cut me down from four bags to three).

My Philosophy on OrganisationThis little “organisation series” has shown you my cards, props, and now my mats. You might have noticed a theme--things don’t need to look perfect to work.

Organisation doesn’t have to be fancy or Instagram-worthy. It just needs to be:
  • Functional.
  • Practical.
  • Right for you.
That’s all that matters.

Over to You
I’d love to know:
  • How do you store your mats?
  • What bags or systems do you use?
  • Do you roll, fold, or do something totally different?

Share your systems with me—I find this stuff genuinely fascinating! (Weird hey?)
And if organisation feels overwhelming for you, I’d be happy to chat things through in a mentoring session. Sometimes a fresh pair of eyes helps uncover simple solutions.

Training Opportunity

Thanks for following along with my organisation series. I hope it’s given you some useful ideas—and permission to let things be a little imperfect.
